Career Description

Behavioral health therapists, counselors and assessment counselor therapists provide comprehensive, psychosocial services, counseling and treatment for patients with mental health or substance abuse issues under the direction of the patient's physician. Assessment counselors are responsible for providing patient assessment and clinical screening for potential admissions. They also will interact with physicians, managed care organizations and insurance companies in performing their work.

Academic Requirements

Requirements may vary by facility, but a minimum of a bachelor's degree in psychology, social work or a related field is required. Most facilities require a master's degree and a license in a related field, such as licensed clinical social worker.
